The Office of the Environmental Steward was created as part of Mayor Michael B. Coleman's Get Green Columbus initiative.  Funded in part with a grant from the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, the Environmental Steward's Office is dedicated to making Columbus a green community.  Our work is focused on three goals:

Get Green   Progress to Date
Get Green Columbus initiative is now three years old, and we have made much progress toward the goals set in 2005. For a summary of this year's highlights, click here. This report outlines some highlights of the work we’ve done together to protect our environment, encourage green jobs and construction, and set a good example for others on this important issue.

Columbus Green Spot Logo   Rain Garden Workshop: October 21 - 22
The Central Ohio Rain Garden Initiative will hold its kick-off Rain Garden Technical Workshop and rain garden installation on Oct. 21 and 22! This two-day workshop will include: a rain garden installation at ODOT, technical information, and presentations.

Columbus Green Spot Logo   GreenSpot Program
Is a recognition program for Columbus residents that are taking steps to protect the environment. You can make your home, school or business a GreenSpot. The program launched July 30, 2008.

  Green Fleet
The City of Columbus has approximately 3,100 on-road and 2,800 off-road vehicles, which consumed approximately 3.6 million gallons of fuel in 2007. As part of Mayor Coleman’s Get Green Columbus initiative, the City is working to reduce vehicle fuel consumption and emissions. The Mayor released an update to the City’s Green Fleet Policy, going into effect on January 1, 2008.

Central Ohio Goes Green
On October 4, 2007, Mayor Michael Coleman joined with elected officials from 12 other local jurisdictions in signing the Central Ohio Green Pact. The Pact represents a new, multi-jurisdictional commitment to Get Green with policies that enhance and protect the quality of life, environment and economic vibrancy of our region.

Green Memo and Green Principles
In January 2005, Mayor Michael B. Coleman issued a comprehensive environmental policy statement, "Get Green Columbus, Environmental Stewardship in the 21st Century."  Known as the Green Memo, it sets forth the city's commitment to making Columbus a greener place to live.  In addition, the City has recently adopted a statement of values, known as the Green Principles.

Climate Protection
On February 22, 2007, Mayor Coleman, with the support of City Council, signed the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement. Since then, the City has completed its baseline greenhouse gas emission inventory for its operations, and is starting to work on its Action Plan to reduce these emissions.

Green Team
To assist the City in implementing the Green Memo, the Mayor convened an advisory team community, business and environmental experts known as the Mayor's Green Team.

Garden Resource Manual
This manual contains information on the significant steps involved in developing community gardens -including securing City land - resources for garden maintenance and availability of materials, and the various community groups that assist citizens in navigating the process.
